self-described poster child for protective gear

September 12 '06
I was out for a leisurely bike ride around the reservoir on Tuesday afternoon. It was a beautiful day.
Kim, the lady bending over the hurt guy, Matt, was first on the scene. I was second. I hope Matt will be ok. He bashed his head on something when he wiped out at the bottom of what I call "Rollerblader Suicide Hill" in south Glenmore park entering the Weaselhead area. There are signs at the top of the hill warning rollerbladers of their impending doom as there is a steep hill followed by a sharp left turn onto a narrow bridge. It would be better to miss the bridge & splash out in the swamp behind but that is why I don't rollerblade.
His buddy took his shirt off to put under his head but no one else had any extra clothes to put on him. When I arrived, he was just coming to. Kim said he had been convulsing & his eyes rolled back in his head. We moved him from lying on his side, because the blood was running from his bleeding ear into his mouth & nose, on to his back. We took his rollerblades off his feet. His left ear was full of blood & he couldn't hear anything out of it. He even had gravel under his eyelids so he couldn't open his eyes much. He was in lots of pain lying there & kept asking everybody what was going on & why was he so messed up & did anybody know what had happened to him? We kept telling him that he had hit his head but he couldn't seem to remember anything since the crash.
Kim did her best to comfort him & then a nurse, Diana, came jogging along & offered to help while we waited for the paramedics.
It took the paramedics about half an hour to get there. One paramedic showed up in an SUV & then the other 5 of them walked the stretcher in from wherever the ambulance was stopped. There was no where for the STARS air ambulance to land. They were waiting for a bush buggy to take him in the stretcher to the waiting ambulance when I left to continue my bike ride. They took him to the Foothills Hospital. I always wear a brain bucket!
I had an update on Matt. He is limping & using a cane & will miss another week of classes. He is still having hearing issues.
