Borat, Casino Royale, Keeping Mum, Blood Diamond

here's what I thought of these movies:

Borat was funnier than I thought it would be, but only funny if one likes toilet jokes which apparently I do. The nude wrestling scene with his fat producer was 10 minutes of gasping for breath because it was so funny in a shocking way for a mainstream film. I don't think it would hold up to second viewing though. I'm looking forward to seeing his next movie about Bruno from Vienna!

Casino Royale is the best Bond movie ever & the new guy is the best Bond since Sean Connery.

Keeping Mum was very funny. Only the English can do murder & comedy quite that way. I have always loved Maggie Smith. I saw her once in the role of Peter Pan in a Christmas pantomime in a theatre in London's west end. Kirsten Scott Thomas & Mr. Bean are great in their roles although I still think of them as Mr. Bean and the blonde from The English Patient. Patrick Swayze seemed like an odd choice for the "American villain", I haven't seem him in anything since Roadhouse, but he was ok. Some wisdom in the comedy of what is important in families and relationships.

Blood Diamond was extremely violent. It was a well done movie, very action packed. I was glad it never got mired in a romantic sub-plot between DiCaprio & Jennifer Connelly. The actor who played Solomon, Dijimon Hounsou ( I double checked the spelling), should be at least nominated for best actor not for supporting actor for the Academy Awards. DiCaprio's Rhodesian/Zimbabwean accent was a little forced huh? I guess if he ever played a Canadian, every sentence he spoke would end in eh?
The plight of boy soldiers in these African conflicts over diamonds and other resources is another immense tragedy added to Africa's other intertwined tragedies of AIDS, corruption, incompetent governance, malaria and more. The friend I went with, had her hands over her eyes for the worst of the gruesome scenes. I guess she didn't trust her eyelids.
I recognized the scenes of Capetown in the movie. Most of the movie was filmed in Mozambique which stood in for Sierra Leone. I think Maputo played the role of Freetown. The ending of the movie wasn't what I was expecting. It must have cost a big pile of cash to make this movie.
The moral of the film in my opinion is to buy Canadian diamonds because it supports First Nations people in the north, as well as the whole Canadian economy. There is no blood on Canadian diamonds. We are now tied with Botswana in diamond production. Botswana is a rare African success story because of their wealth from diamond mining which has been properly invested in the country by the government. There is no blood on Botswana's diamonds either, but who knows what happens when all the African diamonds including conflict diamonds get all mixed up in India and Antwerp which was the point of the movie.
